Astigmatism
The curvature of the cornea is not completely spherical, the curvatures are greater in one meridian than another, more egg shaped.
Astigmatism is a refractive error in which the rays of light do not come to one focal point on the retina, causing blurry vision.
Astigmatism is quite common and can be corrected with laser surgery and/or lens implants.
A patient with astigmatism has an unevenly shaped eye-instead of being spherical, it is off-centre (egg shaped). This is easily corrected by laser eye surgery and can be addressed at the same time as your nearsightedness or farsightedness is being corrected. Astigmatism can also be corrected by a Toric Lens Implant.
