At Blaylock Surgical Centre, our group of general surgeons perform a variety of same-day procedures. These surgeons are highly skilled in their field, bringing with them years of experience and knowledge. Many general surgery procedures can be done quickly and efficiently at the centre, including biopsies, hernia repairs and bunion surgery.

SCREENING COLONOSCOPIES

Screening Colonoscopies now performed at Blaylock Surgical Centre
This procedure is recommended for anyone 50 years of age and up, to determine any early changes in the colon (large bowel), which may lead to more serious health complications, such as colorectal cancer. When diagnosed and treated in the early stages, colorectal cancer may be prevented. High risk patients, those who have a family history of colorectal cancer should speak to their physician about a screening colonoscopy as early as age 40.

This procedure can also help detect inflammatory bowel disease, ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s colitis.

The patient must prepare for this procedure, as directed by their physician. Preparation involves cleansing the intestines in order to optimize viewing. The majority of patients will be on a clear liquid diet for 24 hours prior and required to take a laxative to complete the cleanse.

A colonoscopy is performed as an out-patient procedure under deep sedation administered by an anesthesiologist. During the procedure the physician will examine the patient’s colon and if necessary, remove any abnormal cells or polyps for biopsy.

The procedure usually takes approximately 15 minutes, however, your entire stay will be about one hour. The patient is taken into recovery following the procedure and can return home the same day. You must have someone drive you, the standard protocol following any sedation/anesthesia.
