Nearsightedness (Myopia)
Myopia is a condition that results in difficulty seeing objects at a distance. The majority of patients wear glasses or contact lenses to correct this condition. Myopia can now be successfully treated with laser surgery and/or lens replacements.
A myopic eye is too long, so when light rays enter the eye, they do not converge together on the retina as they should. This results in objects at a distance appearing blurry.
Laser eye surgery will reshape the cornea, ablating tissue from the front of the eye (normally less than a human hair). Removing this tiny amount of tissue is enough to allow the light rays to enter, converge together on the retina and allow for images in the distance to appear crisp and clear.
Lens replacements can also correct myopia. Your natural crystalline lens is removed and replaced with an acrylic implant allowing you, in the majority of cases, to experience improved vision without the dependency of glasses or contact lenses.
