PRK
One of the original laser eye surgery procedures, PRK (Photo-refractive Keratectomy) has been performed for many years with good outcomes. With this procedure, the surgeon removes the outer layer of the cornea (the epithelium) with the use of a laser (no flap is created, as in the LASIK procedures). The surgeon then uses the laser to reshape the cornea. A protective bandage contact lens is placed on the eye for three to four days while the tissue rejuvenates. During this period, the patient will experience some pain, discomfort and light sensitivity but vision will improve. Despite slower healing times than with the IntraLASIK procedure, PRK is the preferred treatment for people with thin corneal tissue, and is used in approximately 25% of patients. Following the surgery, you will be taken to the recovery room and, once you are feeling comfortable, you will be discharged home.
You will return to the centre for post-operative visits at 24 hours, 48 hours, 4 days, and one month. The remainder of your post-operative appointments may be done at our centre or with your local eye care physician. You need to be seen at one week, one month, three months, six months and twelve months.
The majority of patients who receive PRK can return to work within five days of their surgery.
Patient Testimonial
After struggling for many years with my contact lenses and glasses, I finally decided to opt for laser eye surgery. I was told I had thin corneal tissue and PRK was my only surgical option.
The staff at Valley Laser Eye Centre were very informative and I was prepared for my recovery period. Four days following my surgery I was 20/20 and in total disbelief that I had perfect vision without the need for glasses or contacts!
I would highly recommend Dr. Blaylock and his staff to anyone.
Thank you for your expertise and the life changing difference you made to me.
